Student Movember campaign raises more than $6,000 for men’s health causes

At the end of November, the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada informed the School that all of its programs are accredited. This includes the Doctor of Dental Surgery, Internationally Trained Dentists, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Graduate Orthondontics and the General Practice Residency programs.

Schulich Dentistry clinics reopen

On February 15, 2019, Western University became aware of an issue with the water supply in the Schulich Dentistry Clinics. We temporarily closed the clinics as a precautionary measure to investigate the matter and to take steps to correct the issue. In consultation with the Middlesex-London Health Unit, it has been determined that there was no material health concern for patients.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) awarded a Schulich Medicine & Dentistry research group with a Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) operating grant for their project entitled, ‘Novel technologies for engineering closure of non-healing skin wounds’. This multi-disciplinary collaborative research team consists of biologists, engineers, imaging specialists, a veterinarian, clinicians, and industrial collaborator. Primary Investigators include Dr. Douglas Hamilton (Dentistry/Anatomy & Cell Biology) and Dr. Amin Rizkalla (Dentistry/Chemical & Biochemical Engineering), along with David Bagley. Bagley is the CEO of Advanced BioMatrix, Inc. in San Diego, where they manufacture & distribute collagen and other quality 3D matrix products, specializing in three dimensional (3D) applications for tissue culture, cell assay, and cell proliferation. Three-dimensional solutions

Schulich Dentistry researchers are developing novel applications of three-dimensional (3D) printing for use in cranio-facial reconstruction. Amin Rizkalla, PhD, PEng, is the principal investigator and he is working with a team of people, including Yara Hosein, PhD, Drs. Joe Armstrong and Henry Lapointe, as well as David Holdsworth, PhD, to determine how 3D printing can be utilized to develop porous titanium constructs for craniofacial reconstruction. They are hoping that their research will help to solve a large problem in current craniofacial reconstruction methods. See full article on The Bridge
Yoon Chi, Dentistry Class of 2020, awarded first prize in national poster competition

Congratulations to Yoon Chi, who was awarded first prize in the FCDSA’s National Student Research Competition which invited dental student researchers to participate in a scientific poster exhibition and learn about the cutting edge dental research underway across the country. Yoon presented a poster based on her research from Schulich Dentistry's Summer Research Program, entitled “Characterization of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis in aging mice”, supervised by Dr. Frank Beier.

David Feere toured historic Beale Street in Memphis while attending the Hinman Student Research Symposium

The intent is to promote new collaborations that build on different scientific and scholarly backgrounds, to facilitate breakthroughs in solving research questions in a collaborative manner, and to position the School's researchers to successfully respond to targeted requests for proposals from Tri-Council or other funding agencies.

David Zuanazzi, DDS, MSc (PhD Student) and Karla Crosara, DDS (MSc Student) from Schulich Dentistry presented posters at the 95th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR / 41st Annual Meeting of the CADR in San Francisco in March. Both students are supervised by Dr. Walter Siqueira (Schulich Dentistry). At this annual meeting, Zuanazzi was presented with the 2016-2017 CADR-NCOHR Student Research Award for achieving second place in the Canadian Senior Clinical Science category for his work "Detection of Zika virus in saliva by mass spectrometry-based proteomic/peptidomic”.

Congratulations to Dr. Amin Rizkalla for being awarded an Ontario Center of Excellence Innovation and Productivity Award (in the amount of $20,000) for his project titled, ‘Advanced 3D Metal Additive Manufacturing for Dental Metal Substructures’. These funds are leveraged against contributions from Rotsaert Dental Laboratory Services Inc. in the amounts of $5,000 cash and $25,470 in-kind. In addition, Dr. Rizkalla’s application has been approved for $25,000 from NSERC-Engage, conditional on activation of the OCE award.

Dr. Douglas Hamilton and Dr. Amin Rizkalla (Oral Biology-Dentistry) were awarded funds from the ITI Foundation (International Team for Implantology) of US $110K for their work entitled, “Mechanisms for reduced fibrosis and enhanced healing around implants”. ITI is a major international foundation (Swiss based) whose motto is "A non-profit organization of dedicated scientists and practitioners who champion the correct utilization of implant dentistry for the benefit of the patient". Drs. Hamilton and Rizkalla’s research area is significant in regards to keeping implants healthy.

The DCS program consists of pursuing a PhD degree in an area of research relevant to dentistry followed by a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. The program is directed towards highly motivated students whose career objective is to become productive clinician-scientists in dental research or academic dentistry. Kevin Bartman was assessed using the following criteria: (a) demonstrated evidence of superior academic achievement, (b) demonstrated or potential research excellence and (c) aptitude and motivation for a career in academic dentistry.

Kevin Bartman successfully transfers into PhD Program

Kevin Bartman's transfer to the PhD program was approved by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Bartman passed the Department of Biochemistry Qualifying Exam "With Distinction" (this designation is given when a student achieves a score of 4 out of 5 or higher). The qualifying exam consisted of a written proposal of Kevin’s research project being examined by faculty, followed by an oral exam.

Tiedemann was presented with this travel award for his poster 'Modulation of Myofibroblast Differentiation of Nanometric Topographies'. Supervised by Dr. Douglas Hamilton in Dentistry's Summer Research Program, Tiedemann competed for this travel award at Schulich Dentistry's 2015 Annual Research Day.

Congratulations to Dr. Clive Friedman, adjunct professor, for being recognized with the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) Distinguished Service Award. This award is given to recognize outstanding contributions to the dental profession, the dental community or the oral health of Canadians at large.
Spring retreat

The retreat, hosted and led by Dr. Michael J. Strong, included a group of faculty and staff. Dr. Strong led the retreat with a financial overview focused on the School and University. Dr. Santos, as well as Janet Biondi made presentations on the new clinical education and budget models involving practice leaders who would be responsible for delivering improved instruction to dentistry students, and lead to improved faculty calibration. The development of a private practice clinic aimed at improving faculty recruitment and retention was also highlighted.
New CDE Course to prepare future ITD applicants

Beginning in January 2019, Continuing Dental Education (CDE) at Schulich Dentistry will be offering a Canadian Dental Clinical Skills - Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Preparatory Course for those individuals interested in applying to the Internationally Trained Dentists (ITD) Program. Successful completion of the 12-week course will be a prerequisite starting in 2020 for all Schulich Dentistry ITD Program applicants.

Dr. Michael J. Strong announces a new leadership structure for Schulich Dentistry, and the incumbents who will be forming the leadership team. This new structure replaces the previous one in Dentistry effective April 4, 2018.

Schulich Dentistry Research Seminar Series presents a lecture by Zeeshan Sheikh, BDS, MSc, PhD. Dr. Sheikh is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. Title (1): Overcoming the challenge of periodontal regeneration: Monetite cement grafts for achieving more predictable alveolar ridge augmentation prior to dental implant placement. Title (2): Is a generation of spoon-fed and coddled researchers being prepared? CIHR Funding Success for Oral Biology

Congratulations to Dr. Walter Siqueira (Oral Biology) for obtaining major operating research funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Dr. Siqueira was awarded a 5 year grant totaling $614,880 for his project titled 'Novel Salivary Peptides and Their Functions on Dental Caries’.
