Adjunct Faculty Feature: Dr. Lesli Hapak
Windsor Periodontist Dr. Lesli Hapak brings a wealth of expertise and passion for teaching to her role at Schulich Dentistry. In a recent interview, Dr. Hapak shared insights into her career journey, teaching philosophy, and the rewarding aspects of molding the next generation of dentists. “First and foremost,” Dr. Hapak shared, “a persons ‘gums’ and bone are the foundation of dentistry as it relates to the oral cavity.”
Graduating from Western Dentistry in 1991 and later obtaining a Diploma in Periodontics from the University of Toronto in 1994, Dr. Hapak has traversed a multifaceted path in dentistry which has included leadership positions in industry and regulatory organizations. Notably, she has served as President of the Ontario Society of Periodontists and held various roles within the Ontario Dental Association (ODA), including General Councillor and Chair of the Board.
Dr. Hapak's teaching focus revolves around imparting essential periodontal surgery skills to students, particularly those necessary for gum procedures preceding restorative treatments. Outside of her role at Schulich Dentistry’s Dr. Hapak’s practice focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating periodontal disease, offering many procedures including dental implant placement, gum grafting, biopsies, and cosmetic gum surgeries.
Reflecting on her favorite memory of dental school, Dr. Hapak fondly recalls the lifelong friendships forged and the camaraderie shared with classmates. Her passion for teaching stems from her early experiences as a piano teacher and lifeguard/swim instructor as a teenager.
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching for Dr. Hapak is providing students with a realistic perspective of the dental profession post-graduation. She finds fulfillment in equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in their professional endeavors. She recommends that students should speak with practising dentist to get their perspective of what the profession has to offer and what the expectations are in the dental field.
Dr. Hapak acknowledges that dentistry offers opportunities beyond clinical practice, particularly in organized dentistry—a facet she didn't fully anticipate during her dental school years. Her advice for aspiring dentists is to engage with practicing professionals and dental students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the profession and its expectations.
