Funding: Western Bone & Joint researchers receive two Arthritis Society Grants

Schulich Medicine & Dentistry researchers who are part of the interdisciplinary Bone and Joint Institute have been awarded two major Arthritis Society grants — one to study the cellular workings of osteoarthritis in knee joints, and the other to examine whether a specific protein inhibitor might be used to halt or treat scleroderma fibrosis.

Common prostate drug could increase risk of depression, self-harm

Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry professor Blayne Welk (Division of Urology) said the use of medications finasteride and dutasteride – for the treatment of an enlarged prostate – doesn’t increase the risk of suicide, but has shown a slight increase in the risk of depression and self-harm in some individuals. His research was published in JAMA Internal Medicine this past month.

Zooming in, expanding out: professor builds business out of imaging research

Jeff Carson saw a picture-perfect opportunity to spin his lab work into a new company. The Medical Biophysics professor, whose research focuses on biomedical imaging applications, including photoacoustic tomography to detect breast cancer, recently applied his skills in multispectral imaging and launched Spectral Devices Inc. Located in Western’s Research Park, the company is developing a vast array of filtered lenses to be used in everything from agriculture and aerospace, to industrial automation and satellites.

Western postdoctoral fellow Molly Henry, part of Jessica Grahn’s Music and Neuroscience Lab at the Brain and Mind Institute, was recognized with the Association for Psychological Science Rising Star Award, which identifies outstanding psychological scientists in the earliest stages of their research career post-PhD. Henry’s focus is on how the synchronization between brain rhythms and environmental rhythms shapes auditory perception.

Schulich Medicine & Dentistry researchers Paula Foster and Greg Dekaban are one step closer to being the first in Canada to use MRI cell-tracking in humans to determine the fate of cell-based immunotherapies for cancer. Thanks to a grant from BioCanRx announced today, the team at Robarts Research Institute will be able to move their research into human trials.
