Funding: Western Bone & Joint researchers receive two Arthritis Society Grants

Schulich Medicine & Dentistry researchers who are part of the interdisciplinary Bone and Joint Institute have been awarded two major Arthritis Society grants — one to study the cellular workings of osteoarthritis in knee joints, and the other to examine whether a specific protein inhibitor might be used to halt or treat scleroderma fibrosis.

“As clinical firsts, Barnard’s . . . heart transplantations played as high drama, seemingly miraculous medical successes that fuelled a media frenzy,” wrote Shelley McKellar, PhD, in a recent publication in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. “It was hoped that the surgical accomplishment would translate immediately into an effective heart failure treatment, but that outcome was far from certain.”
