Female surgeons and residents from Schulich Medicine & Dentistry gathered in operating rooms at London Health Sciences Centre’s University Hospital, Victoria Hospital and St. Joseph’s Health Care London this week to add their voices to a global rallying cry for women surgeons.

CFMM receives Canada Brain Research Fund Grant

Detecting dementia takes top spot at 3MT competition

Tamara Tavares, a PhD Candidate at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, took the top spot in Western’s sixth annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition last week, tackling the complex world of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder.

Common prostate drug could increase risk of depression, self-harm

Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry professor Blayne Welk (Division of Urology) said the use of medications finasteride and dutasteride – for the treatment of an enlarged prostate – doesn’t increase the risk of suicide, but has shown a slight increase in the risk of depression and self-harm in some individuals. His research was published in JAMA Internal Medicine this past month.
