Announcement: Dr. Davy Cheng takes on Vice Dean role
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Davy Cheng has been appointed as Vice Dean, Faculty Affairs effective July 1, 2017 until June 30, 2023.Dr. Cheng has served as the Chair/Chief, Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine since September 2001. He will conclude this role in June 2017. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto in 1983, and completed his anesthesia residency and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 1987 at the University of Toronto. He completed a subspecialty in a Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship at the University of Iowa.
Dr. Cheng joined Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 2001, and is cross-appointed in the Department of Medicine. He was named a Distinguished University Professor at Western University in 2010. He has been serving as an active leadership member on the London hospitals Medical Advisory Council since 2001, and as Chair of the Committee of Clinical Chairs at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry since 2012.
Well recognized by his peers as a mentor and role model for trainees and junior faculty, Dr. Cheng is a talented and innovative clinician-scientist, a dedicated and skilled anesthesiologist, and a visionary and inspirational leader. He has fostered an environment of growth and innovation with significant impact to clinical care, research, health care administration, policy implementation and development of many signature programs that aligned with the Schulich Medicine & Dentistry strategic plan. He has established the Evidence-Based Perioperative Clinical Outcomes Research program and co-directs the Medical Evidence, Decision Integrity, Clinical Impact Centre, which has achieved recognition by the World Health Organization to become an official Collaborating Centre in the study of Global Perioperative Surgery Care and Anesthesia at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry.
Dr. Cheng is a world-renowned clinician-researcher in perioperative anesthesia and critical care. He has held over $6 million in peer-reviewed grants and over $1.6 million in non-peer reviewed funding. He has published more than 154 peer-reviewed papers and 52 book chapters. He has served as President of the Association of Canadian University Departments of Anesthesia. He was appointed member in the World Health Organization GIEESC Anesthesia Committee in 2013. In 2016, he was elected Chair of the Board of Trustees of the International Anesthesia Research Society and Chair of the Scientific Affairs Committee at World Federation Societies.
Dr. Cheng is a well-respected health care leader in evidence-based medicine and health policy. He has received numerous additional awards and honours. In 2007, he received Joint Medical Advisory Committee Award in London, and was inducted as Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In 2010, he was named the inaugural Rotman-Longwoods Scholar, Ministry of Health and Long-term care. In 2013, Dr. Cheng was designated as Canadian Certified Physician Executive by the Canadian Medical Association and the Canadian Society of Physician Executives. In 2014, he was honoured with the CSPE Excellence in Medical Leadership Award and in 2015 he was awarded the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society Gold Medal.
