The meeting was held in Pittsburgh, PA in September, where Dr. QingYong Xu was presented with a Scholar Abstract award for his publication. The joint scientific meeting was intended to promote collaboration between experts in solid organ transplant pathology and histocompatibility/immunogenetics. Researchers Analyze Epigenetic Signatures to Diagnose Rare Diseases. Now, a team of Canadian and American scientists have developed a computational tool that can diagnose 14 rare, hereditary disorders based on a patient’s episignature. Dr. Bekim Sadikovic and his colleagues used data from patients to train a machine learning algorithm—a type of artificial intelligence—to distinguish between the 14 conditions. Dr. Chris Tran is a third-year resident in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. It was during his pre-clerkship that he became fascinated by the way clinical diseases are the result of complex genetic, cellular and histological changes. He then shadowed a pathologist and learned to appreciate the importance of pathological diagnoses and the influence they have on patient care.
