    Pathology and Laboratory Medicine held a Regional-Ready Laboratory Team Design Retreat on November 4, 2019 in order to finalize plans for operationalizing regional partnerships.

  • ASHI/BANFF Joint Scientific Meeting

    December 10, 2019
    The meeting was held in Pittsburgh, PA in September, where Dr. QingYong Xu was presented with a Scholar Abstract award for his publication. The joint scientific meeting was intended to promote collaboration between experts in solid organ transplant pathology and histocompatibility/immunogenetics. The objective of this alliance was advancing diagnostic testing for solid organ transplant recipients with an emphasis on the immunology and pathology of antibody-mediated rejection.

    Congratulations to Dr. Ziad Solh, recipient of a Blood Efficiency Accelerator Award from Canadian Blood Services. Dr. Solh’s study aims to compare the survival and cancer cure outcomes for patients with cervical cancer when hemoglobin is kept at two different levels prior to radiation therapy.

  • Researchers Analyze Epigenetic Signatures to Diagnose Rare Diseases

    April 05, 2019
    Researchers Analyze Epigenetic Signatures to Diagnose Rare Diseases. Now, a team of Canadian and American scientists have developed a computational tool that can diagnose 14 rare, hereditary disorders based on a patient’s episignature. Dr. Bekim Sadikovic and his colleagues used data from patients to train a machine learning algorithm—a type of artificial intelligence—to distinguish between the 14 conditions. They then tested the algorithm and showed it was correct around 99% of the time.

It was during his pre-clerkship that he became fascinated by the way clinical diseases are the result of complex genetic, cellular and histological changes. He then shadowed a pathologist and learned to appreciate the importance of pathological diagnoses and the influence they have on patient care. He knew then that Pathology was his calling.
