TRAINING SITE/PRACTICE DESCRIPTION

The St. Joseph's Family Medical and Dental Centre (SJFMDC) is affiliated with St. Joseph's Health Care London and is located in the northwest section of London near the university campus. SJFMDC was the first full-service family medical centre in Canada. A senior citizens' complex and married students’ quarters are located nearby. SJFMDC is composed of five teaching teams. Each team consists of a staff physician, two residents and a family practice nurse. SJFMDC is a family health organization and is part of the Thames Valley Family Health Team. The Thames Valley Family Health Team includes a pharmacist, dietitian, occupational therapist, social worker, a psychologist and two nurse practitioners.

PRACTICE EXPERIENCE

The patient mix on each team ranges from infancy to elderly.

EDUCATIONAL/TEAACHING OPPORTUNITIES

SJFMDC is dedicated to providing the best educational experience possible for the residents. We pride ourselves with a comprehensive academic curriculum:

  • Faculty to resident ratio: 1:2
  • Hospital care: London Health Sciences Centre – University Hospital
  • Palliative care: Patients’ homes and London Health Sciences Centre – University Hospital
  • Obstetrics: London Health Sciences Centre – Victoria Hospital
  • Elderly care: Office, residence of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Earl’s Court Nursing Home, on-call care for nearby long-term care facilities
  • Procedural room on-site
  • House calls are part of regular patient care
  • Academic activities:
    • There is a Wednesday morning academic curriculum with teaching done by faculty as well as residents
    • Chief resident organizes other in-centre teachings
  • Mental health care: Residents may participate in care concurrently with our psychiatrist

RESOURCES ON-SITE

  • Dental clinic
  • Fully-equipped procedural room for office-based minor surgical procedures and casting
  • Shared Mental Health Care Program: a psychiatrist provides on site consultations one and a half days a week
  • Primary Care Diabetes Support Program: a physician, nurse practitioner, diabetes educator, dietitian and a social worker offering comprehensive diabetes care and diabetes case management and Foot Care Nurse
  • Thames Valley Family Health Team; Pharmacist, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, Dietitian, Psychologist, and two Nurse Practitioners

A TYPICAL WEEK FOR A RESIDENT AT SJFMDC INCLUDES:

  • Office based clinics including procedures
  • Hospital rounds
  • In-centre and department wide academic half days (Wednesdays)
  • Multidisciplinary patient care rounds
  • Wednesday Teaching rounds
  • On Call responsibilities:
    • 1 in 8 weekday and 1 in 8 weekends
    • Includes after-hours evening and Saturday clinics
