Dr. Susan McNair is a full time staff physician with the Department of Family Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry and is a clinical team lead at the St Joseph's Family Medical Centre. She teaches at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as at the graduate studies level in the Master of Clinical Science in Family Medicine program.
She has special interest in the care of vulnerable populations, with expertise in the forensic, medical and psychological care of victims of acute sexual assault and domestic violence. As the Medical Director of the Regional Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Treatment Centre at St Joseph's Hospital she regularly incorporates undergraduate and postgraduate learners into her work at that Centre. As the Medical Advisor to the Ontario Network of Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Treatment Centres she is responsible for the development of treatment protocols and clinical pathways for adult and pediatric victims presenting to the 38 Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Treatment Centres across the province. Her research interest is in the area of injury patterns in cases of acute sexual assault, where she utilizes this knowledge in her role as expert witness at all levels of the judicial system.
Dr McNair's philosophy of teaching is firmly entrenched in principles of transformative learning theory, whereby adult learners are encouraged to be vulnerable and to take risks by allowing ones’ assumptions and attitudes to be challenged, within a supportive and safe learning environment. Outcomes of transformative learning include having a deeper self-awareness, having more open perspectives, and experiencing a shift in worldview - all essential qualities for an effective family physician. Dr McNair considers it a privilege to challenge and support learners on their journey of growth and transformation. Providing didactic, evidence-based teaching alongside case reviews, one on one observation and feedback and techniques such as the five-minute preceptor method, all immersed in a setting of support and moments of humor, are essential to successful teaching and satisfied learners. Understanding the particular learning needs of each learner, as well as their aptitudes and interests, is key to meeting these needs. Dr McNair gains immense satisfaction and joy from her role as a teacher in family medicine.
