There are 22 Enhanced Skills positions available that are split between the positions offered to those applicants that are certificate-eligible by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
To be eligible, you must:
- be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- be a resident currently enrolled in a Canadian family medicine residency program accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) who will be starting their PGY2 residency year on or before Dec 31st of the year of application to the PGY3 programs *
- be a resident enrolled in postgraduate year 2 (PGY-2) in an ACGME accredited American Family Medicine program.
* All residents who will be completing their PGY2 training between July 1st and December 31st must declare their completion date on the application form and request a late start for their PGY3 residency training.
If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited program in the United States, you must join the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) as a resident member and provide evidence that you are registered in an accredited program.
Ministry of Health (MOH) Re-entry positions are available for in Enhanced Skills. Interested applicants need to apply through the MOH program and must meet eligibility criteria set by the MOH. Western does not disclose individual program capacities, but will review applications once received.

Application Timeline (for 2024/2025):
- Application opens: August 2024
- Application closes: September 10, 2024 at 12:00 PM Eastern Time
- Interviews:
- Category 1 Programs National Interview Period: October 11, 2024 to November 29, 2024
- Category 2 Interview Period: TBD
- Category 1 CaRMS Match Date: December 12, 2024
- Category 2 Match Date: TBD (rolling process)
- Start Date: July 1, 2025
- End Date: June 30, 2026
Application Process:
- Please note, you can only match to a single Category 1 program through CaRMS. Should you match to a Category 1 program through CaRMS, this is a binding contract and you will need to relinquish or decline any subsequent Category 2 offers you receive. Should you receive and accept a Category 2 offer PRIOR to the CaRMS rank order list deadline, you will need to withdraw from the CaRMS match. Between the rank order list deadline and match day, you cannot accept any Category 2 offers. Any circumvention of this policy will result in a match violation and may result in disciplinary actions.
- All positions are subject to the availability of funding. We are not currently accepting internationally sponsored residents.
- Applicants are encouraged to submit their application as soon as possible because the reference letter requests are generated electronically and the system will only email them once the application has been submitted. Out of respect to your referees, please submit your application at least 3 weeks before the deadline. You can only submit one application per program that you are applying to.
