    Dr. Stephen Wetmore, Chair of the Department of Family Medicine, is pleased to announce the interim directorship of the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine, (CSFM). Effective November 1, 2018 through to September 30, 2019, the interim Co-Directors of the CSFM will be Dr. Sonny Cejic and Amanda Terry, PhD.

  • Funding: Heart and Stroke Grant enables researchers to study the effect of exercise on the brain

    Thanks to a recent grant from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Dr. Rob Petrella, Professor at Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, and a team from the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine will be initiating a community-based exercise program combining high-intensity exercise with mind-motor training with the goal of looking for ways to improve cardiovascular health and cognitive function.

    The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) has named Dr. Susan McNair as an Award of Excellence recipient for Ontario in 2018. The Awards of Excellence recognize College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) members who in the past 24 months have made outstanding contributions to family medicine.

  • Announcement: Professor Emerita of Family Medicine and former Dean to be honoured at fall Convocation

    Dr. Carol Herbert, Professor Emerita of Family Medicine, who served as Dean of Schulich Medicine & Dentistry from 1999 to 2010, is among those being celebrated this fall when Western University bestows honorary degrees on seven Canadian luminaries at the 312th Convocation. A pioneer in developing services for sexually assaulted adults and children in British Columbia, Dr. Herbert was co-founder and co-director of the Sexual Assault Service for Vancouver from 1982 to 1988.

  • Award: Dr. Henry Becker named CFPC Research Award for Family Medicine Residents recipient

    Congratulations Dr. Henry Becker on being named a recipient of The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Research Awards for Family Medicine Residents for his project “Long term treatment outcomes in a First Nations high school population with opioid use disorder.” Dr. Becker has been asked to present at Family Medicine Forum (FMF) in November.

  • Award: Dr. Jane Thornton named recipient of the prestigious Murray Stalker Award

    Congratulations to Dr. Jane Thornton on being named the recipient of the prestigious Murray Stalker Award from The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). Dr. Thornton is a resident physician, researcher and advocate for physical activity for the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. She has led a national strategy on physical activity in the undergraduate medical curriculum, and created and curated resources for both patients and physicians on the topic.

  • Research News: New public health research debunks “grey tsunami”

    An examination of chronic diseases among Ontarians has uncovered that the volume of multimorbidity is derived from adults as young as 35 years old. Multimorbidity has been associated with increased physician and specialist appointments, medication use, emergency department use and hospitalization.

    Congratulations Dr. Daniel Pepe on receiving two prestigious resident teaching awards. Dr. Pepe was recently recognized with the OMA Resident Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to the advancement of postgraduate training, and the PARO Resident Teaching Award for providing outstanding clinical teaching experiences to junior residents and clinical clerks. Dr. Pepe is a Family Medicine resident in the PGY3 Academic Family Medicine program.

  • Award: Dr. Puneet Seth recognized with Canadian Society of Hospital Medicine award

    The Canadian Society of Hospital Medicine recognized Dr. Puneet Seth with the 2017 Award for Outstanding Service in Hospital Medicine for his work done in founding a hospitalist department at the Woodstock General Hospital, helping to bring quality improvement through electronic documentation, and creating a teaching site for family medicine residents in hospital medicine in Woodstock. Congratulations Dr. Seth.

  • Award: Drs. James and Leslie Rourke named co-winners of WONCA 5-Star Doctors award

    Congratulations to Drs. James and Leslie Rourke, this year's co-recipients of the WONCA 5-Star Doctors award for the North America region. The Rourkes were co-honoured for their life’s work as family physicians and the significant contributions they have made to family medicine for the past 35 years, including the development of the Rourke Baby Record.
