Dr. Ian McWhinney Lecture Series - Inaugural lecture announced
The Department of Family Medicine is excited to announce the inaugural lecture from the Dr. Ian McWhinney Lecture Series on Wednesday, September 23, 2015.
We are thrilled that Dr. Michael Kidd, WONCA president, will deliver the lecture. Dr. Kidd reflects the principles and values articulated by Dr. McWhinney.
This lecture series is being established to honour the legacy of the first Professor of Family Medicine and Chair of our department, Dr. Ian McWhinney. Dr. McWhinney was the first to introduce Family Medicine as a distinct discipline within medicine. He championed the concept of patient centeredness and helped to create this as a major theme for research in our department.
Dr. McWhinney's writings included such themes as the centrality of the doctor/patient relationship, the subjective experience of illness, the meaning of illness and suffering, the importance of physician self-knowledge, and the theoretical foundations of family medicine among others.
The lecture series will be hosted by the Department of Family Medicine at the Western Centre for Public Health and Family Medicine.
This will be a major event for the Department of Family Medicine, for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and for Western University.
Save the date and plan to join us for the inaugural Ian McWhinney lecture on September 23, 2015.
Stay tuned for more information.
