Dr. John Yoo, has been appointed Interim Chair/Chief, Paediatrics, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London, effective October 18, 2018 to December 31, 2019 or until the position is filled.
Campaign feasibility study provides important insights

During the first six months of 2018, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry worked with consulting firm Grenzebach Glier and Associates (GG+A) on a feasibility study focused on a capital fundraising campaign totalling $30 million, which would support significant infrastructure renewal for the School.
New UME curriculum unveiled

With physicians expectations changing, the needs, interests, and learning styles of medical students changing, and societies expectations for a greater inclusion of cultural safety in the delivery of health care increasing – medical education must change. Schulich Medicine is embarking on a curriculum renewal for the MD Program to meet the changing needs of society. This transition will begin to be implemented in September 2019 and will continue through phases in the coming years.

Recognizing that school boards have limited budgets for public health interventions, researchers at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Ivey Business School have used the principles of cost-effectiveness in order to determine whether or not naloxone programs are the best use of resources.

Drs. Michael Silverman, Sharon Koivu and Laura Rodgers showed that both surgery and in-hospital addictions counselling are linked to significantly reduced mortality in injection drug users with a heart valve infection called endocarditis.

Media Release: Pollen DNA provides potential new window for forensic information

Bogumil Karas, PhD, is using synthetic biology techniques – the design and construction of new biological entities – in order to develop a method to efficiently capture DNA from pollen grains. Because different plant species are endemic, scientists use pollen to identify their place of origin. In this way, pollen can be used as a forensic tool to link suspects to crime scenes, or to determine the movement of narcotics, for example.

That was the thrust of the question put forward by Thales Canada in its latest Student Innovation Championship. With no prior background in computer science, three Western University graduate trainees at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry decided to take a leap and banked on the fact that their critical thinking, thirst for innovation, and ability to think big could lead to success.

Dr. Burneo is the Co-Director of the Epilepsy Program at Western University and London Health Sciences Centre. He is also Co-Director of EpLink, an initiative of the Ontario Brain Institute focused on bringing researchers, clinicians and community members together to improve diagnosis and treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy.

Media Release: Researchers uncover gene that regulates fat accumulation and obesity

A new study from Western University showed that regardless of diet, a protein called Pannexin 1 (Panx1) significantly regulates the accumulation of fat in mice. The study, published in Scientific Reports, suggests that a deletion of the Panx1 gene in the early stages of development of mouse fat cells increases the amount of fat accumulated, leading to a higher risk for obesity later in life.
