SITE DIRECTOR BIO

Dr RickettsDr. Paul Ricketts completed his undergraduate degree in chemistry at Queen's University, before attending Western University for medical school at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He then went on to complete his family medicine residency through Western University at the Chatham-Kent training site.

Dr. Ricketts practices family medicine and emergency medicine in Chatham-Kent, at the Thamesview Family Health Team, and the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance. He has been involved in clinical teaching since 2018.

He also currently serves on the Thamesview Family Health Team board.

Dr. Ricketts is married (to another family physician) with two young children. He enjoys spending time camping and canoeing with his family.

TRAINING SITE/PRACTICE DESCRIPTION

Chatham-Kent (https://www.chatham-kent.ca) is a municipality of over 100,000 with over half of this population living in the City of Chatham. It is blessed with the beautiful shores of Lake St. Clair to the west and Lake Erie to the east. Recreational areas are plentiful and employment is primarily farming and manufacturing based. Chatham is known as the Classic Car Capitol of Canada.

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (http://www.ckha.on.ca) is a 200+ bed community hospital, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and technologies. With sites in Chatham and Wallaceburg, CKHA is designated a schedule one facility under the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and cares for tens of thousands of inpatients, outpatients and emergency patients annually.

TYPICAL WEEK FOR RESIDENT

In PGY1, a typical day will consist of inpatient work in the morning, followed by am & pm office practice. Emergency room shifts & Ambulatory Care procedures depend on the schedule of the preceptors – usually 1-2 per week. Intrapartum obstetrics is integrated into the family practice experience. On call for Obstetrics is with the two FM Obstetrical Preceptors. OR assists & Hospitalist work are also integrated.

In PGY2, the typical week is described above in the curriculum section with immense flexibility.

On-call

Call will be required as per the service, or Hospitalist call 1 time per week. Hospitalist call is in-house from 4 - 11:59 p.m. and the on call Hospitalist will be available and eager to provide support during this time.
