Alumni News: Dr. Andrea Sereda named Top 40 Under 40
Congratulations to Alumna Dr. Andrea Sereda, BSc '03, MD ’07, who was named as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 for 2018. The recognition honours Canada's outstanding leaders under 40 years of age.
Dr. Sereda, who graduated from Schulich Medicine in 2007, works in the Health Outreach program at London Intercommunity Health Centre (LIHC), focusing on women’s homelessness. She runs an innovative program called ‘Street Level Women At Risk’ (SLWAR) which is a collaborative program that assists women who are engaging in survival sex work, to secure permanent housing with supports.
SLWAR began operations in April 2016. Of the 28 women who participated in SLWAR in the first year, 86 per cent experienced chronic homelessness before entering the program and, through SLWAR, over 90 per cent of participants now have stable housing.
Through SLWAR, Dr. Sereda is involved in street outreach medicine and serves as a family physician providing the full scope primary care. Dr. Sereda works to incrementally move her patients on a path to improved wellness.
Recipients of the Top 40 Under 40 will be honoured at the Top 40 National Celebrations to be held in Toronto in November, including the Top 40 Awards Night Gala at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on the night of November 21, 2018.
In total, six Western Alumni were recognized with the 2018 Top 40 Under 40 honour this year.
