Department Spotlight: Jane Stokes-Rees
What do you most enjoy about your role in the Department?
I haven’t been in the department for long, but so far, I love the people here. There’s a great sense of camaraderie in family medicine; the faculty and staff are all very positive. There’s a strong culture of dedication to high-quality teaching and respect for hard work, but I’ve noticed that the culture also supports the pursuit of a healthy work-life balance. This department, by definition, recognizes diversity in clinical practice and so I think that the default here is for people to be very welcoming in general.
What’s been your most memorable experience while working in the Department?
It’s fun to reconnect with people I used to work with. In the short time I’ve been here, there’s been a lot to learn – I’m so grateful that I have experience in undergraduate medicine to help with the learning curve.
What’s your greatest accomplishment?
Overall I am most proud of the loving, safe home I’ve made for my family. A work accomplishment I’m proud of is my Schulich Scholar of Merit award, and personally I’m proud of my roller derby career.
What do you like to do outside of work, how do you enjoy spending your time?
You can find me at home arranging flowers from my garden, baking, cooking, knitting, painting, sewing, playing video games, mixing cocktails, or doing various DIY projects. I play softball on a team with other retired roller derby players, and I also like walking, kickboxing, yoga, roller skating, and lifting weights. I love live music and volunteer on the board for Sunfest. I also volunteer at Safespace, a shelter in east London, where I’ve met some amazing people.
