Emergency Medicine Subspecialty Training Fellowship
Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) subspecialty training at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University has a long and storied tradition. We graduated our first fellow in 1989, prior to PEM being recognized as a certified subspecialty by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. We currently offer a 2-year subspecialty training program to residents who are completing their core residency training in Pediatrics or Emergency Medicine. We are a fully accredited program of the RCPSC, having last been reviewed in 2019.
The primary training site for our training program in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre. We see approximately 39,000 patients annually in our 22 bed department. We have an additional 18 overflow beds available in the evenings for ambulatory care patients. We are the second largest pediatric trauma center in Ontario, serving as the pediatric trauma center for Southwestern Ontario and parts of Northwestern Ontario.
Our training program is focused first and foremost on producing PEM physicians with excellent clinical skills. Our goal is to ensure our graduates have the skills and ability to work in any emergency department in North America. Within the expectations outlined by the RCPSC we ensure to maximize flexibility to tailor the program to meet the individual needs of each of our trainees. Fellows from our program have gone on to become PEM leaders in a number of fields including education, research, simulation and point of care ultrasound.
We have a great group of PEM faculty who are extremely dedicated to the education of our PEM fellows. Our faculty hold a number of leadership positions internationally and nationally and serve as excellent mentors to our fellows. Being a small program, the faculty truly take an active interest in our fellows’ education and well-being. We are small knit group and being a fellow here makes you a part of the Western PEM family for life!
Thank you for your interest in our program, please feel free to reach out to discuss training opportunities in our department.
