Oh baby! London hospital registers record-breaking birth boom

The numbers are in at Southwestern Ontario’s largest hospital, and they’re record-breaking. London Health Sciences Centre medical teams delivered 561 newborns last month, its highest monthly total on record, enough to fill the seats on three Boeing 737 jetliners. “We’re on par for over 500 babies in August. too, but I don’t know how much above 500 we’ll be yet,” said Dr. Tracey Crumley, LHSC’s chief of obstetrics and gynecology.

The benefits of 3D models in ovarian cancer research

London, Ontario–based translational oncology scientist Dr. Trevor Shepherd dedicates his career to breaking new ground in ovarian cancer research. He’s currently developing three-dimensional (3D) models of cancer cells, using tissues donated by women with ovarian cancer. In technical terms, these are called patient-derived organoids, essentially miniature tumours that are grown in a lab. Importantly, they preserve the characteristics of actual tumours, and respond just as a tumour would when changes to its surroundings are introduced.
