Obstetrics/Gynaecology - Chatham

Contact person: Dr. Neerja Sharma
Contact person: Sabrina Phibbs

The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance does approximately 1000 deliveries per year (90-110 per month). We are a Level 2 Obstetrics & Gynecology and Neonatal Service. We have 4 obstetricians, 6 family physicians and 5 midwives providing obstetrical care to the community. Approximately 75% of the deliveries are under the care of an obstetrician, and this will be the patient population that you would normally have access to. We have had a well established teaching program since 1999, training medical students, family medicine residents, and Family Medicine Enhanced Skills in Obstetrics PGY3 residents.

The Women and Children’s Health program underwent extensive renovation and expansion in 2004. Our floor has been further renovated in 2013.  We provide Family-Centered Obstetrical Care to a diverse patient population, including a stable long-standing African-Canadian population, care to 2 First Nation peoples, a Mennonite community and a largely rural area. We have excellent support from our endocrinologist and a well-organized GDM support program at the hospital. A progressive pain management protocol is in place, including adjuvant therapies, Nitronox, PCA, and an epidural service.

We offer a busy community-based service. Rotations are 4 weeks in length, and call is home-call 1:4 (7 calls/month). Only 1 trainee is on-call at any one time, so as to maximize each person's experience.

You may be asked to present at OB rounds or Journal Club while on the service. You will be expected to attend office clinics for 3 of 4 weeks of the rotation and delivery room for 1 week. We offer broad exposure to routine and high risk obstetrical care, and general gynecology and urogynecology.

You will also be scheduled for some days in the OR in order to understand the indications for and typical procedures that your patients may be offered.

Orientation is provided on the first working day of the rotation. This will include orientation to the hospital, the OR, ER, L&D and the special care nursery. You will also be oriented to the computer system, PACS, and the dictation system . The Women and Children's Program is an active participant in the MOREOB Patient Safety Program, and you will have access to the learning materials and workshops.

Housing is provided on this rotation in 2 apartments designated for residents, the cost of which is covered by SWOMEN.

If holidays are required, please email or fax the request forms to Dr. Sharma.
