Hospitalist Program - St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital

The aim of this elective is to expose the resident to the total care of in-hospital patients under the one to one mentorship of a hospitalist.
This experience offers:
- One to one contact with hospitalist from approx. 0800 hrs to 1700 hrs. Monday to Friday - no "on-call” required. Work 1 weekend per month – usually 0800 hrs to 1500 hrs on Saturday and Sunday.
- Share in care of 25-35 in-hospital patients on the medical and surgical wards, and rarely, paediatric ward.
- Share in pre-operative assessments and post-operative ward care.
- Learn to admit, assess, and formulate a treatment plan for admitted patients.
- Learn to perform simple ward procedures, such as thoracentesis, paracentesis, bone marrow aspiration, joint injections, and wound debridements.
- Learn to interact with patients, their families, and their family physicians.
- Learn to manage in-hospital urgent and emergency situations.
- Residents are expected to give one presentation during their rotation on a pertinent topic of inpatient clinical medicine. Residents will also have the opportunity to attend hospital rounds which are usually every second Saturday morning.
Scheduling: Can take 2 residents/block.
