General Surgery - St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital
Contact person: | Dr. Rob Black |
The St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital is located 30 minutes south of London. It is the only hospital in Elgin county which serves a population of 80,000. St. Thomas is a full service hospital with most services found at larger hospitals including internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, palliative care, and a host of surgical subspecialties. We enjoy a good working relationship with our community GP's and hospitalists who are actively involved in inpatient and outpatient care.
There are 6 General Surgeons on staff. Dr. Rob Black, Dr. Paul Collins, Dr. David Bottoni, Dr. Alex Zhuruk, Dr. Jeff Armstrong and Dr. Hugh McLachlin cover surgical subspecialties which include the traditional domain of general surgery, plus fracture orthopedics, plastic surgery, endoscopy, thoracic surgery, intensive care medicine, and ambulatory surgery. The true appeal of this rotation to Family Medicine residents is the assessment and management of a wide variety of basic surgical diseases on the ward and the ambulatory care procedures such as rigid sigmoidoscopy, excision of lesions, scleral therapy, and wound care.
