General Surgery - Sarnia

A team of three General Surgeons; Dr. Rajeev Suryavanshi and Dr. Patrick Taylor will be supervising the rotation of residents at Sarnia General Hospital, Bluewater Health region, Sarnia.
The rotation will provide experience on surgical ward inpatients, surgical clinic, consults on inpatients and emergency department, exposure to endoscopy & operating rooms.
Resident will also have opportunity to assist and perform ambulatory care procedures under direct supervision.
There are monthly Medical Grand Rounds and Family Medicine Rounds at Sarnia General Hospital. Also there are Oncology Rounds, that take place three times a month, via video conference from Windsor.
Bluewater Health is actively working towards starting a fast track one stop oncology clinic, targeting mainly at Breast and Colorectal Cancers.
Weekly Rotation Schedule - Dr. Rajeev Suryavanshi
Monday: endoscopy day
Tuesday: alternate week endoscopy @ Petrolia Hospital, else educational day, and ward round.
Wednesday: a.m. ambulatory care for excisions, p.m. teaching with London program
Thursday: office (clinic) full day.
Friday: operating day
Schedule - Dr. Patrick Taylor
Monday: ward round and surgical clinic full day
Tuesday: 1 & 3 week endoscopy at Petrolia, 2 & 4 week ambulatory clinic at Petrolia.
Wednesday: endoscopy
Thursday: operating room
Friday: Ambulatory Clinic.
We also provide option of: 1 full day of urological ambulatory care day and at least one to two days of ambulatory care with orthopaedic surgeons, so candidate should be comfortable in dealing with routine injuries, including hands on skills on immobilisation and paster slabs/casts. ENT out patient clinic.
We try to individualize and tailor this rotation, to maximise learning on one to one basis, typically our preceptor will sit with the residents in first two days and plan the full rotation.
Scheduling: Can accommodate four residents per year, one at any time.
