OB Skills Acquisition Day
PGY1 Family Medicine residents attended the 2nd annual OB Skills Acquisition Day on November 4th. A group of dedicated staff and faculty came together under the leadership of Dr. Jo-Anne Hammond to run a smooth and informative 1/2 day workshop with hands-on stations covering everything from the mechanics of a normal vaginal birth to diagnosing and treating a shoulder dystocia.
The afternoon featured a combination of high tech/low tech simulation-based work stations with residents rotating through every 15-20 minutes.
The objectives for the day included:
- To accurately assess cervical dilatation using a variety of non-human models.
- To accurately assess the position of the vertex presentation
- To be able to perform artificial rupture of membranes. ( using water balloon models)
- To learn how to apply a fetal scalp clip
- To understand the mechanics of a normal vaginal birth
- To be able to diagnose and treat a shoulder dystocia
- To be able to diagnose and treat post partum hemorrhage
- To be able to repair a second degree tear or episiotomy
- To become expert at tying hand knots.
The idea for the event came after faculty members, Drs. Jo-Anne Hammond, John Jordan, and Laura Lyons, attended a group meeting for family physicians who practice obstetrical care. The hope is that OB Skills Acquisition Day will continue to grow to a yearly event.
The current event is modeled after the University of Calgary's Department of Family Medicine OB Skills Day.
Overall, the day was well-received by our residents, and reviewed as a "fantastic learning experience."
