Mark your calendars, the fourth annual Dr. Ian McWhinney Lecture will take place on September 26, 2018.
We are pleased to announce Dr. C. Ruth Wilson, practicing family physician, and a Professor Emerita of Family Medicine at Queen’s University, where she was Chair of the department for ten years. She is currently the President of the North American region of WONCA, the world organization of family doctors.
From 2001-2004, Dr. Wilson served as Chair of the Ontario Family Health Network, a provincial government agency created to implement primary care reform in Ontario. This effort laid the groundwork for the widespread primary care models in Ontario including Family Health Teams. She is a past president of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. She is past chair of the Canadian Medical Forum, a round table of CEOs and presidents of Canada’s major medical organizations.
Dr. Wilson’s practice as a family physician includes eleven years in remote communities in Canada, and twenty-nine years in Kingston, Ontario. Her practice in the northern Canada included anesthesia and obstetrics.
In 2010, Dr. Wilson was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women. She is the recipient of the Canada 125 medal, the Diamond Jubilee Medal, and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Thomson Rivers University. In 2015, she was named a member of the Order of Canada. She is married to Dr. Ian Casson, and they have five adult children and two grandchildren.

Opening remarks and the annual Dr. Ian McWhinney Lecture will begin at 2:30 p.m. and will be followed by a celebratory reception.
The lecture series has been established in memory of Dr. McWhinney, the founding chair of the Department of Family Medicine and one of the leading thinkers in the discipline of Family Medicine.
