PLA Course Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Prerequisites

To participate in this course, you must have received an invitation from the ITD Program office confirming that your application to The Advanced Standing Program for International Dental Graduates (ASPIDG), formerly known as the ITD Program is complete. You must have your registration number when registering on-line for the PLA Course. The registration number is given to you from the ITD Program office, after all documentation has been received.

We strongly urge that you register as soon as possible for this high-demand course as your enrollment is not guaranteed. Seats are limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. *If the course is full, email the Continuing Dental Education (CDE) office at cde@schulich.uwo.ca to be placed on a waitlist.

Terms to guranteed spot in the PLA Course: Both intallments 1 and 2 must be paid before the deadline date, September 6, 2024 at 11:55 p.m. to confirm your spot in the PLA Course.

Basic Sciences - Self-paced asynchronous online lectures

IMPORTANT: Cohort A has a maximum participant number of (50 ppl), once this is reached the course is full and there are no more spots available.

Course location

Lectures will be delivered asynchronous and online via the OWL Portal. These modules self-paced with a mandatory assessment at the end of each weekly module. The assessments must be completed by the deadline date specified in each module. Clinical sessions will be held at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Simulation Clinic at Western University, 1151 Richmond Street, London, ON, N5A 5C1. Full directions and parking information will be provided by Continuing Dental Education closer to the beginning of the course.

Computer Requirements (ONLINE lectures)

Lectures will be delivered (self-paced) asynchronous online on the OWL Portal by pre-recorded video lectures and PowerPoint slideshow. Important: It's the responsibility of the candidate to make sure you have the computer system requirements so you are able to successfully complete the online portion of the PLA Course.

Online lectures - Computer requirements
You MUST have access to a modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, etc. ) and also have an internet connection, to use OWL.

Important: to open/watch a video locally on your computer you need a video player (included with most operating systems, or use VLC).

To open a downloaded PowerPoint slideshow, you need to have a program that supports PPTX files (i.e., PowerPoint, Google Slides, LibreOffice, etc.)

Course Requirement - Attendance

PLA Course Requirement: 80% mandatory attendance for both the in-person/clinical sessions and complete all the online assessments (via module assessments) is mandatory to successfully complete the course. Failure to successfully complete this course will void your invitation to the Schulich Dentistry Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Exam.

Online lectures: These self-paced asynchronus lectures are all presented online and a reminder email will be sent out weekly for you to watch the lectures, along with a quiz/assessment at the end of each module. The quiz must be completed and submitted before the deadline date specified for each module. It’s the candidate’s responsibility to make sure to complete and submit the quizzes by the deadline dates or it will negatively affect the 80% attendance requirement. No late submissions allowed.

In-person clinical sessions is required to successfully complete the course. Times: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm daily except for registration (Dec 2) will begin at 8:00 am. Dec 6 classes will end 1.5 hrs earlier for Kit Audits.

Terms: You must attend 80% of the in-person clinical sessions AND complete/submit the assessments for the online portion of the course.

If there is an unexpected emergency preventing you to attend an in-person session, you are REQUIRED to inform the CDE office in writing in advance if you will be absent. Please email the Continuing Dental Education (CDE) office directly at CDE@schulich.uwo.ca. Important note: the absence and incomplete assessments will affect the 80% mandatory attendance requirement. Complete and submit the online assessments before each deadline and attend the in-person sessions to guarantee your invitation to the PLA Exam.

Tuition fee

Course fee is $8,549 + HST payble by Visa or Mastercard ONLY. A deposit (1st Installment) of $4,000 + HST is due at initial registration. The final balance (2nd Intallment) must be paid before Friday, September 6, 2024 11:55 pm EST, (registration deadline.)

Cancellation policy

There is a $400 administration fee for any cancellation received BEFORE September 6, 2024. NO REFUNDS AFTER September 6, 2024 at 11:55 pm. Tuition fee will be forfeited. Absolutely NO exceptions to the policy.

  • Safety glasses (for clinical sessions). Loupes are optional

  • No food is provided during this course. We recommend you bring your own packed lunch in an insulated lunch bag daily.
  • You MUST BRING ALL ITEMS above. If not, you will NOT be able to complete the exercises. This will affect the successful completion of the PLA course and will void your invitation to the PLA Exam.
  • The school does NOT sell the items listed above. Make sure you bring EVERYTHING listed above to each clinical session.
  • You will be responsible to pay for broken, damaged or lost instruments/equipment.
  • DO NOT bring your own instruments to the course. Not allowed in the SIM Clinic.

What is provided

  • All dental/hand instruments (for use during the PLA clinical sessions only), limited supply of burs, dental materials and supplies for the daily exercises also provided. 
  • Personal protective equipment (gloves and extra masks)

How long is the PLA Course valid?

The PLA Course is valid for two ITD Program application cycles. That is, participants who have successfully completed the PLA Course can take up to two consecutive PLA Exams immediately following the course, if eligible. Participation in the PLA Course does not guarantee admission to the ITD Program.
