• Acuity STAR 5.24b - Released on December 5, 2019

  There is a new version of STAR now in production. Updates to the program include the ability to accept scanned PDF uploads of teaching summaries that have been received from teaching sources outside of Western, as well as changes to the Teaching Philosophy, Supervisory Experience & Mentoring Activities, and Teaching Innovations & Curriculum Development sections.

• Collaborating to address rare childhood cancer

  Dr. Bütter and her team are part of the Pediatric Surgical Oncology Research Collaborative (PSORC), a group of Canadian and American paediatric surgeons from more than 30 hospitals. They share data on rare childhood cancer to accelerate research in the hopes of improving outcomes for children with sarcoma.

• Study eyes minor surgery opioid prescriptions

  Men who filled a prescription for opioids after minor surgery were at significantly higher risk of persistent long-term opioid use and hospitalization for opioid overdose than those who did not, according to a study led by Division of Urology members.

• Epidemiology Seminar Series: Ethical issues in placebo controlled trials in surgery

  Charles Weijer is the leading expert on the ethics of randomized controlled trials. In this talk he will be discussing the ethics of placebo controlled trials in surgery as well explore the C-SAW trial evaluating arthroscopic subacromial decompression. The seminar will take place on Friday, October 11 from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. in room K203 (Third floor of the Kresge Building).

• Heineken Prizes - 2020

  The Heineken Prizes are international prizes worth $200,000 each awarded every other year to five internationally renowned scientists and scholars. The Heineken Prize for Medicine is awarded to a scientist who has conducted pioneering medical research. Nomination deadline is October 15.

  The deadline for the Internal Research Fund (IRF) and Resident Research Grant (RRG) Competition is Friday, October 11. All clinical members of the department are eligible to apply for the IRF competition and all residents of the department are eligible to apply for the RRG competition.

• Post-surgery opioid prescriptions pose significant addiction risk

  Study led by Dr. Jeffrey Campbell, assistant professor in the Division of Urology, and colleagues found filling a narcotic prescription post-surgery increased the chance of long-term opioid use by 43 per cent.

  Congratulations to Dr. Alan Getgood, Assistant Professor, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, and the Stability study team on being awarded the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) O’Donoghue research award for best clinical paper. The team’s findings, “Stability Study: 'Lateral Extra-Articular Tenodesis Reduces Failure of Hamstring Tendon Autograft ACL Reconstruction –Two Year Outcomes from the STABILITY Study Randomized Clinical Trial’” will be presented this summer in Boston at the Society’s annual meeting.
