In 2019, three surgical departments at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) launched a Cut the Count campaign to reduce opioid prescriptions. All three departments surpassed the target level, with LHSC Children's Hospital achieving more than double the target goal. For patients with kidney stones, ureteral stents (hollow devices placed in the ureter – the tube between the kidney and bladder) can be used temporarily to relieve urinary obstruction. Despite the use of antibiotics, ureteral stents often become encrusted with minerals and coated with bacteria.
