SRTP and SROP Funds

Purpose

The aim of the Schulich Research Opportunities Program (SROP) is to enrich undergraduate medical and dental education by enabling students to conduct research under the supervision of a Schulich Medicine & Dentistry faculty member.

The program is intended to foster an appreciation for and proficiency with the research process. It will complement other existing programs to foster student research, including Schulich Medicine & Dentistry's Summer Research Training Program (SRTP) and student research opportunities in Dentistry. It is hoped that this program will provide an opportunity for students to learn how research is conducted and will encourage medical and dentistry students to incorporate research activities into their future career plans.

Purpose

The goal of the Summer Research Training Program (SRTP) is to encourage medical students to pursue their interests in medical research. SRTP enables first and second year medical students in Schulich Medicine & Dentistry to work under the supervision of a faculty member on a research project during the summer months, for two years. 

Award Amount

Schulich provides funds for two summers, in the form of a stipend, to support STRP participants. Participants will be paid at a rate of $4,500 for an entire summer. Participants are expected to work full-time for 10 weeks on their project.

Award Duration

Students participate in SRTP for ten weeks in each of the summers following the first and second years of the MD program. SRTP requires a two year commitment from both the student and the supervisor.

• Review and approve applications to ensure the funds are available, and to ensure the good use of department research funds.
• Review the close-out report and a copy of the abstract or poster to ensure the academic program is meeting the obligations to the students.

• You may request a paper application from the Department Office by emailing OBGYNinfo@lhsc.on.ca or Request a Form using our online form.
• Completed applications can be dropped off at the office (LHSC VH B2 room 404), or submitted by email to OBGYNinfo@lhsc.on.ca. 
• The Finance Committee will consider applications, as they are received, based on the schedule below.
• The Chair/Chief will use the FMC approval to sign the application on behalf of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
• Schulich will contact the Chair/Chief in advance of sending offer letters to students to confirm funding. Departmental funding for these projects will be matched by funding from Schulich.

IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE FACULTY MEMBER TO PROVIDE A CLOSE-OUT REPORT ON THE PROJECT AND A COPY OF THE POSTER/ABSTRACT TO THE FMC WITHIN 30 DAYS OF THE END OF THE AWARD PERIOD.

Applications need to be received and approved at least one month prior to Schulich’s annual application deadline (i.e., an application will not be considered for reimbursement if it has been submitted AFTER the FMC meeting the month prior to Schulich’s deadlines).
