Congratulations Dr. Stephen Wetmore on your Retirement
It is with heartfelt congratulations that we wish Dr. Stephen Wetmore well on his imminent and well-deserved retirement! Dr. Wetmore has made significant contributions to the discipline of Family Medicine over his long career. He has been an incredible champion and role model for the clinical practice of Family Medicine as well as the development of Family Medicine as an academic field including medical education, and research.
Dr. Wetmore graduated medical school from the University of Toronto in 1975. At the completion of his internship at Toronto East General Hospital he started practicing comprehensive Family Medicine in Mount Forest, ON. In 1991, he was awarded the Mount Forest Citizen of the Year. The next phase of his career involved moving to London, ON with his family in 1993 and becoming an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Western University.
Dr. Wetmore has been strong advocate for comprehensive Family Medicine. In addition to his office-based practice at the Victoria Family Medical Centre, he has provided obstetrical care, long-term care and coroner’s work. He has a passion for Family Medicine procedures and was the Chair of the College of Family Physicians of Canada Working Group on Procedural Skills that defined the core procedural skills for Canadian Family Medicine.
Dr. Wetmore is committed to lifelong learning and received his Master’s of Clinical Science in Family Medicine from Western University in 1999. He has been heavily involved in countless research and scholarly activities. Furthermore, he has given numerous presentations in local, provincial, national, and international forums. Dr. Wetmore has also supervised, taught, and mentored generations of medical students, residents, and graduate students. His excellence in teaching has been recognized with a Canadian Association for Medical Education Certificate of Merit, a Schulich Educator Award for Excellent for Postgraduate Medicine, and the Western Family Medicine Dr. Ian McWhinney Teaching Award.
Dr. Wetmore has been an exemplary leader both at Western University and beyond. He has served on many important committees with the Canadian Medical Protective Association, the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP) to name a few. Furthermore, he served as the President of the OCFP from 2008-2009. In recognition of all of his contributions, he received the distinguished designation of Professor in 2009. His significant leadership roles at Western included being the Family Medicine Program Director and Enhanced Skills Program Director prior to being appointed as Chair/Chief of Family Medicine in 2011.
In his role as Chair/Chief of the Department of Family Medicine, Dr. Wetmore has accomplished many notable endeavours including the creation of a departmental building, finalizing the first comprehensive practice plan, and bringing the West Middlesex Heath Centre in Strathroy to fruition. He has continued to promote Family Medicine at all levels.
Dr. Wetmore has also been a friend, colleague, coach, and mentor to all of us.
Congratulations again on your retirement and wonderful career. We hope that you’ll take the time to stay in touch when you’re not out adventuring across the country in your RV! Thank you for all that you have taught and instilled in us. We will continue to make you proud!
