Undergraduate Report
The undergraduate year is now well underway. Meds2022 are completing electives and preparing CaRMS applications, Meds2023 are 8 weeks into clerkship, Meds2024 are working through the Principles of Medicine II course, while the first years, Meds2025, are learning in the Foundations of Medicine course.
Although large group lectures are currently taking place virtually, Schulich plans to resume all learning in-person starting in January 2022. This is inline with Western’s overall plan and will respect any Middlesex-London Health Unit guidelines.
Within Family Medicine Undergraduate Education, I am extremely pleased to announce we are now recruiting LCE (Longitudinal Clinical Elective) supervisors! The LCE originally launched in the early 2020 but was suspended due to the pandemic. This important course replaces the previous second year Family Medicine Patient Centered Clinical Methods (PCCM) course. The Longitudinal Clinical Experience will provide early exposure for medical students to real patients in a generalist, primary care setting. The course will span over years 1 and 2 of Medical School. The program will initially provide an observership experience for students and evolve over the sessions to provide an opportunity to learn history taking and examination skills, as well as gain medical knowledge. Role modelling and mentorship will also be key outcomes of the LCE.
The ask of our community adjunct faculty is to consider supervising TWO students (one 1st year and one 2nd year). 1st year students will be expected to spend 4 half-days in your practice between January and April/May. 2nd year students will complete 6 half-days over this same period. The dates and times of these sessions are arranged between you and your students and can include after-hours and on-call work, if appropriate. Students can attend for any combination of half and/or full days to meet their placement requirement. A stipend, consistent with that paid for supervising clinical clerks and residents, is available to adjunct faculty who participate in the LCE.
