WORKSHOP

Integrating Rigorous Evaluation into Learning Health Systems in Ontario

Facilitators: Dr. Merrick Zwarenstein, Centre for Studies in Family Medicine, Western University and Jen Rayner, PhD, Epidemiologist and Lead of Research Program, Association of Ontario Health Centres (AOHC).

DESCRIPTION

A learning health system (LHS) integrates research into health care delivery. A LHS is defined as a system in which "science, informatics, incentives, and culture are aligned for continuous improvement and innovation, with best practices seamlessly embedded in the delivery process and new knowledge captured as an integral by-product of the delivery experience." Taking this theoretical concept and applying it practically has challenges but offers the opportunity for improvement in quality equity and efficiency of health care through continual innovation and evaluation.

This interactive workshop will review the theory of a LHS and discuss a framework that focuses on nine key operational components to a LHS. We will then break into smaller groups and apply this framework to a system/organization and discuss various gaps and strategies towards becoming a LHS.
