Chair's Message

One of the great things about Family Medicine is the variety in scope and location of practice that is available. Changes in the clinical care we provide can be challenging, refreshing and rewarding.

For those family physicians who are looking for some additional practice opportunities, I invite you to consider some work at Parkwood Institute, where there is a need for family physicians to provide care to patients in complex care and palliative care.

Complex care patients are those with complex needs beyond the scope of nursing home care. They may have neurological disease or other disabilities resulting from injury or disease. The patient is supported by an interprofessional team who work together to meet the patient’s goals and transition them back to the community or to provide continuing care. The family doctor plays a key role, looking after medical needs in a compassionate and caring manner. This work provides interesting challenges but is very rewarding.

Palliative care is part of complex care and is focused on meeting the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of patients facing terminal illness from a variety of causes. The family physician plays a compassionate role dedicated to relieving pain and debilitating symptoms. Once again a team of professionals is available to support patients and families and assist greatly with the role of the physician.

Family physicians are the ideal doctors to provide this care because of their comprehensive and patient-centred training.

So, if you are looking for some variety in practice, a chance to boost your clinical skills and care for some of our most vulnerable patients, call me to discuss opportunities that exist at Parkwood Institute.

As always, I welcome your feedback at stephen.wetmore@schulich.uwo.ca
