Program Overview

Simulation is an important element in the education of Emergency Medicine learners at all levels. Simulation provides the opportunity for deliberate practice of skills, exposure to rare and challenging patient presentations and for ongoing assessments of learner abilities as they move towards competence. Recognizing the demand for a comprehensive healthcare simulation program, the initial EM Simulation Program was established in 2012. With the introduction of CBME the EM Simulation Program has continued to develop the program to meet the needs of the EM residents. Most recently simulation has expanded to include in-situ simulation sessions for the EM team including consultants and allied health care providers as part of ongoing quality improvement initiatives.

The Western EM Simulation Program is comprised of dedicated physicians, many of whom have specialized simulation training. This group has been instrumental in integrating simulation into educational programs and continuing professional development (CPD) activities. Theatre based and in-situ simulation modalities are combined to deliver simulation experiences to medical students, residents, and consultants. Below is an overview of the various simulation based educational experiences offered by the Western Adult EM Sim Program.
