Celebrating Our Achievements
Winter 2024/2025
As always, there is much to celebrate at Schulich Dentistry this season!
A huge congratulations goes out to DDS Candidate Kristian Jamieson, who is the proud recipient of the Tom Longboat Award from the Aboriginal Sports Circle.
This nationwide award for sports excellence honoured one male and one female Indigenous athlete from each province at a gala and award ceremony in Ottawa.
Earlier this month, Kristian competed in the Hamilton marathon in preparation for the 2025 Boston Marathon, and placed 2nd in his age group.
We are excited to see if Kristian is able to beat his great-great-grandfather Tom Longboat's record time in that marathon!
Dr. Quiñonez once again generously matched donations up to $1000 for our annual fundraiser. This year, as in 2023, our selected charitable organization is London and Area Food Bank.
Our annual bake sale on November 25th was an enormous success once again, and the one-day event raised $1776.57. Check out the photos here.
Dentistry's generosity really gives us something to smile about! Once Dr. Quiñonez's matching donations were added, we were ahead of last year's donations with a grand total of $2776.57.
As of today, our total donations are holding at $2822.35, and the non-perishable items are slowly starting to pile up in the clinic donation boxes.
***There is still time to give!*** You can bring in some canned or dry goods until December 18th, or donate online until December 20th.
In other racing news, Mary-Elizabeth Jones was invited to participate in the December 2024 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand. Mary-Elizabeth has been training extra hard and her colleagues are enthusiastically cheering her on. We look forward to sharing a picture of her crossing the finish line in a future newsletter!
Speaking of marathons and training, Cheryl Sorensen has been working very hard on additional qualifications. Since September 2022, she has been enrolled in the RPN refresher program at Fanshawe College. The programs consists of classes and labs. Since July 6th, she has been completing her practical clinical hours on weekends and working 12-hour day and night shifts in addition to her regular work in radiology. Cheryl is scheduled to be done this month - if you see her, be sure to congratulate her on this tremendous accomplishment.
Many long days have also been spent by faculty and students rehabilitating patients. On November 5, 2024, the Dentistry Surgical Care Unit (DSCU) celebrated treating its 400th patient since the Unit restarted operations in November 2021. The DSCU is a partnership with the Department of Anaesthesia/Perioperative Medicine and Schulich Dentistry where patients receive dental treatment under general anaesthesia. Faculty dentists work one-on-one with dental students who rotate through as part of course D5420 serving both paediatric and adult patients. Many medicine residents have also experienced learning in the DSCU.
With special thanks to Schulich's operations teams for their support, the DSCU contributes to the operations of many dental and Indigenous public health units. Patients routinely come from as far away as Windsor-Essex, Brantford, and Kitchener, with the furthest patient coming from Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation in Northern Ontario.
Thanks to a grant received by Dr. Les Kalman which funded the purchase of intraoral scanners, Schulich Dentistry is expanding its digital dentistry offerings. Dental students Michelle Morris (pictured, front) and Stephanie Wallace (far right) were able to pilot the use of one intraoral scanner under the guidance of Adjunct Clinical Professor, Dr. Giulio Spagnuolo (2nd from right) with the assistance of our school laboratory technician, Hiro Shirakawa (left).
A special thanks to our patient (centre) and to Rotsaert Dental Labs for their assistance in the project.
Dr. Kalman was also featured on CTV News online and live on iHeart Radio on a piece titled ‘What you should never do, according to a dentist.’
On November 7, 2024, Dr. Antonios Mamandras, pictured below, centre, Professor Emeritus and esteemed Chairman of Graduate Orthodontics at Western University, 1994 - 2019, was honoured with the OAO Distinguished Service Award for his years of teaching at Western University. Many Schulich Dentistry residents and alumni attended to show their support at the event which was held at the OAO Business meeting and dinner at the Toronto Sheraton Centre Hotel.
Schulich Dentistry congratulates Dr. Mamandras for this well-deserved recognition and extends sincere thanks for his many years of dedication to the Schulich Dentistry Graduate Orthodontics program.
Our faculty were also recognized by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) recently. This fall, the RCDC welcomed the new 2024-2025 Board of Directors including Dr. Keith Da Silva as Provisional Vice-Chair and to represent Dental Public Health. Schulich Dentistry extends congratulations to Dr. Da Silva for this appointment.
Additionally, the RCDC welcomed Dr. Christina McCord as the New Chief Examiner, Fellowship Examination, and described her expertise and leadership as “invaluable as the College continues its commitment to excellence.” Schulich Dentistry extends congratulations to Dr. DaSilva and Dr. McCord for these accomplishments.
We would also like to congratulate Dr. Abbas Jessani (pictured below, second from left) on being awarded a Fellowship at Pierre Fauchard Academy for 2024.
