C.Y. Lung and W.W. Wood Awards
Consider nominating a faculty member for one of the following awards by May 31, 2024:
C.Y. Lung Award
Dentistry Council supported the establishment of the C. Y. Lung Award to recognize the outstanding contributions by the late adjunct professor Dr. C. Y. Lung to the Undergraduate Dental Program at Schulich Dentistry. Dr. Lung is remembered for his playful and encouraging disposition, his contagious smile and laugh, and bringing positivity, insight and humour to his interactions with students, patients, staff and colleagues alike.
In honor of C. Y. Lung, this award is given annually to a part-time faculty member of Schulich School of Dentistry who has made significant individual contributions to the school. The recipient's name will be engraved on a plaque in the Director's Office and they will receive a certificate acknowledging this recognition.
To nominate an individual for the C. Y. Lung Award, the name of the nominee along with a description indicating the individual’s contributions to Undergraduate Dental Education at Schulich School of Dentistry is required.
ACFD W. W. Wood Award
The Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry (ACFD) has established the W.W. Wood Awards for “Excellence in Dental Education” to commemorate Dr. Bill Wood whose academic career exemplified dedication to research, teaching and service.
One ACFD “W.W. Wood Award for Excellence in Dental Education” will be awarded each year, in each Canadian Faculty of Dentistry, to a full or part-time faculty member who has completed at least three years of teaching in a Canadian Faculty of Dentistry. The award will consist of a permanent plaque engraved with the recipient’s name to be displayed in a prominent place in each of the Faculties of Dentistry. In addition, each recipient will receive a certificate from the ACFD.
Award Criteria:
The faculty member should:
- demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of his/her subject area;
- be habitually well prepared for teaching sessions, be they lectures, laboratories, seminars, tutorials or clinics;
- demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject and the capacity to arouse interest in it among the students;
- encourage student participation in the teaching/learning process;
- set high standards of student involvement and performance and successfully motivate students to attain such standards;
- communicate effectively with students at appropriate levels;
- utilize methods of evaluation of student performance which assess the higher levels of knowledge acquisition;
- be accessible to students outside of class hours and provide for reasonable access by all;
- be recognized as a superior teacher by students and colleagues; and
- demonstrate Leadership in Dental Education.
