Congratulations to our colleagues on their recent successes:
Dr. Sheila Butler had her NSERC Discovery grant renewed for 1 more year.
Dr. Cecilia Dong was appointed to serve as the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry (ACFD) representative for the American Dental Education Association Annual Session Program Committee (ADEA ASPC). The theme of the ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition in New Orleans, LA from March 9 - 12, 2024 is New Beginnings, Endless Opportunities.
Abby Hensel and Luis Limo from Dr. Noha Gomaa’s lab both defended their Master’s thesis in Epidemiology & Biostatistics in August.
Ker-Yung Hong, DDS Candidate 2027, discussed his pilot study on the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) Oasis platform titled Oral inflammatory load and the prediction of vascular function in a young adult population. The study was conducted along with researchers Dr. Trevor King, Mount Royal University, and Dr. Michael Glogauer, University of Toronto. Watch the full conversation here.
Alex (Keng-Shuo) Pi, Anelyse Found, Jennifer Guo, Kevin Zhou, Luis Limo and Mansha Nayyar were awarded the Student Presentation awards for their outstanding poster presentations during Research Day. Ahmed Abbas and Joeleen Phillip were awarded Research Studentships by the Ontario Dental Association (ODA) and Western’s Nominee for the 2024 Canadian Dental Association (CDA)- Dentsply Sirona Student Clinician Research Competition was Alex (Keng-Shuo) Pi. Luis Limo, PhD student supervised by Dr. Noha Gomaa, was awarded the 2023-24 Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR) and the Network for Canadian Oral Health Research (NCOHR) Student Research Award in the Senior Clinical Research Category for his project titled, Poor access to dental care can exacerbate multimorbidity in adults with sub-optimal oral health. This recognition will enable Luis to present his research at the 2024 IADR/AADOCR/CADR General Session to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, March 13-16, 2024.
Dr. Jeffrey Lovell is now a fully licensed OMFS surgeon and has been appointed as Program Director for the General Practice Residency (GPR) Program in Hospital Dentistry. Dr. Lovell graduated from our DDS, GPR, and OMFS programs, also achieving an MSc in Pathology and an MD degree at Schulich.
Dr. Carlos Quiñonez is one of three researchers at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry who have been elected to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS). Schulich’s Dr. Cindy Hutnik and Adrian Owen, PhD are also among the 48 individuals to receive the honour this year. CAHS Fellows are nominated by their peers and selected in a competitive process based on their internationally recognized leadership, academic performance, scientific creativity, and willingness to serve.
Dr. Jacinta Santos was recently promoted to tenured professor.
Dr. Ali Tassi has been promoted to tenured associate professor and appointed as the Antonio Mamandras Chair in Graduate Orthodontics.
