    A thank you to everyone for a very successful Research Day. This includes a collaboration of faculty, staff, student presenters, poster judges, volunteers, and also participants who took the time to challenge our students by asking questions; we believe over 300 faculty, staff and students attended the events! Hopefully you enjoyed learning about the research (both clinical and basic science) being conducted by our students within Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, and we also hope the research on “Pain Control’ being conducted by Dr. Ken Hargreaves helps with a clearer understanding of opioid use in Dentistry.   • Andrei Zaharia presents at the CDA/Dentsply Sirona Student Clinician Research Program

    Andrei Zaharia (DDS 2019), represented Schulich Dentistry at the 2018 CDA/Dentsply Sirona Student Clinician Research Program which took place during the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) Convention in Charlottetown, PEI. Zaharia (supervised by Dr. Amin Rizkalla), was awarded this opportunity during Schulich Dentistry’s Annual Research Day by placing in the top 3 poster presentations. Read more .... 

  • Dr. Kalman Receives Innovation Award for Patient-Centred Care

    Merck Patients First Awards were presented in 2013 and 2014/15. The 2017/18 competition followed a similar process, including formal communications and publication of winning entries (with consent) to support sharing of best practices in patient-centred care. Read more ....

  • 2018/19 Internal Research Grant (IRG) Competition

    Dentistry Research invites all qualified researchers to submit project proposals for the2018/19 Internal Research Grant (IRG) Competition. The IRG Program supports research initiatives of relevance to oral health or dental education, and promotes scholarly activity by faculty members whose primary appointment is within Schulich Dentistry. A maximum of $10,000 is available to successful applicants for seed money, one-time requests, and projects of short duration.

  • CIHR Funding Success

    Congratulations to Schulich Dentistry Faculty Members on their success in the recent 2018 Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Funding Competition. $703,800 for 5 years was awarded to Drs. Doug Hamilton, Les Kalman, Mark Darling, and Amin Rizkalla. $410,624 for 4 years was awarded to Drs. Walter Siqueira and Elizabeth Gillies. 

  • Karla Crosara - NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship-Doctoral Award

    Congratulations to Karla Crosara (PhD student supervised by Dr. Walter Siqueira), for being awarded the prestigious Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Postgraduate Scholarship-Doctoral Award ($63,000 over 36 months).

    Congratulations to Professor Emeritus Jeffrey Dixon, PhD, who was honoured by the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) as the 2018 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Research in Oral Biology. 

  • 2018 Quintessence Research Award - Kim Beaucage

    Dentistry's 2018 Quintessence Research Award was presented to Kim Beaucage, DDS 2018, on the recommendation of the Research Committee, following nomination by faculty supervisors. This is an annual award to a graduating dental student who has been exemplary in research in the undergraduate dental program. 

  • Recognizing Retiring Faculty

    On Thursday, June 21, 2018, Schulich Dentistry recognized the retirements of three much valued faculty members, Dr. Jeffrey Dixon, Dr. Cornelis, Driessen, and Dr. Sahza Hatibovic-Kofman, Professor Emeritus. Thirty faculty and staff gathered at the Grad Club to wish Drs. Dixon, Driessen and Kofman the best in the next chapters of their lives. Read more...

  • Celebrating the Dentistry Class of 2018 with Kim Beaucage

    Steadfastly focused on dentistry as a career, Beaucage completed the Schulich Dental Clinician-Scientist (DCS) program. The unique program consists of a PhD in an area of research relevant to dentistry followed by a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. She is excited as she looks forward to working in the clinic where her journey began.  

  • Schulich Medicine & Dentistry collaborative research group successful in competition

    Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) awarded a Schulich Medicine & Dentistry research group with a Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) operating grant for their project entitled, ‘Novel technologies for engineering closure of non-healing skin wounds’. This multi-disciplinary collaborative research team consists of biologists, engineers, imaging specialists, a veterinarian, clinicians, and industrial collaborator. Primary Investigators include Dr. Douglas Hamilton (Dentistry/Anatomy & Cell Biology) and Dr. Amin Rizkalla (Dentistry/Chemical & Biochemical Engineering), along with David Bagley. Bagley is the CEO of Advanced BioMatrix, Inc. in San Diego, where they manufacture & distribute collagen and other quality 3D matrix products, specializing in three dimensional (3D) applications for tissue culture, cell assay, and cell proliferation.   • Dr. Suzanne Bernier Memorial Fund

    An annual lecture series and trainee graduate award in Skeletal Biology was established in honour of Dr. Suzanne Bernier (a wonderful colleague, collaborator and mentor, who passed away in 2007), to highlight outstanding contributions to the field of musculoskeletal research. The Dr. Suzanne Bernier Memorial Fund, along with sponsors (Schulich Dentistry, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Dept of Anatomy & Cell Biology, Western's Bone and Joint Institute, and the Collaborative Program in Musculoskeletal Health Research), contribute to Suzanne’s legacy by funding these projects.   • Sharing Smiles

    Hockey with the Mighty Dents, singing Karaoke, and horsing around with JW, the Western Mustangs mascot, were just a few of the fun activities that kicked off the 2018 Sharing Smiles Day. Once again, Schulich Dentistry hosted more than 200 participants for what was the ninth annual day, which is hosted in partnership with Oral Health Total Health (OHTH).

    The Schulich Dentistry Research Opportunity Program (SDROP) provides an opportunity for students enrolled in the DDS program to contribute to clinical and basic science research being performed in Schulich Dentistry. Each year, there are a limited number of Studentships awarded by competition. 11 Research Projects were funded for the summer of 2018.  

  • Three-dimensional solutions

    Schulich Dentistry researchers are developing novel applications of three-dimensional (3D) printing for use in cranio-facial reconstruction. Amin Rizkalla, PhD, PEng, is the principal investigator and he is working with a team of people, including Yara Hosein, PhD, Drs. Joe Armstrong and Henry Lapointe, as well as David Holdsworth, PhD, to determine how 3D printing can be utilized to develop porous titanium constructs for craniofacial reconstruction. They are hoping that their research will help to solve a large problem in current craniofacial reconstruction methods. See full article on The Bridge 

  • Yoon Chi, Dentistry Class of 2020, awarded first prize in national poster competition

    Congratulations to Yoon Chi, who was awarded first prize in the FCDSA’s National Student Research Competition which invited dental student researchers to participate in a scientific poster exhibition and learn about the cutting edge dental research underway across the country. Yoon presented a poster based on her research from Schulich Dentistry's Summer Research Program, entitled “Characterization of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis in aging mice”, supervised by Dr. Frank Beier.

  • Schulich Dentistry education programs receive accreditation status

    Schulich Dentistry underwent an accreditation process in 2017, receiving approved accreditation status across the four dental education programs – Doctor of Dental Surgery, Internationally Trained Dentists, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Graduate Orthodontics.

This award is given to recognize outstanding contributions to the dental profession, the dental community or the oral health of Canadians at large.  

  • Spring retreat

    The retreat, hosted and led by Dr. Michael J. Strong, included a group of faculty and staff. Dr. Strong led the retreat with a financial overview focused on the School and University. Dr. Santos, as well as Janet Biondi made presentations on the new clinical education and budget models involving practice leaders who would be responsible for delivering improved instruction to dentistry students, and lead to improved faculty calibration. The development of a private practice clinic aimed at improving faculty recruitment and retention was also highlighted. 

  • New CDE Course to prepare future ITD applicants

    Beginning in January 2019, Continuing Dental Education (CDE) at Schulich Dentistry will be offering a Canadian Dental Clinical Skills - Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Preparatory Course for those individuals interested in applying to the Internationally Trained Dentists (ITD) Program. Successful completion of the 12-week course will be a prerequisite starting in 2020 for all Schulich Dentistry ITD Program applicants.
