About this seminar: Recently our ability to accurately describe biological events that take place during bone regeneration has drastically been improved by advancements made in the fields of cell and molecular biology. The present talk will discuss the future field of osteoinductive materials including the recent advancements made in synthetic osteoinductive bone grafts. Furthermore, the development of a liquid formulation of enamel matrix derivative (Osteogain) for bone and periodontal regeneration, as well as the bone-inducing properties of BMP9 will be discussed. Lastly, advancements in centrifugation protocols will be presented as key modifications to platelet rich fibrin (PRF) therapies.
A note about our speaker: Dr. Richard Miron is currently an Adjunct Professor in the department of Periodontology at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. He also serves as a visiting professor in 3 dental schools including in Wuhan, China (Oral Implantology) UIC in Barcelona, Spain (Oral Surgery), and Bern, Switzerland (Cranio Maxillofacial Surgery). From 2015-2016, he was the head of the Oral Cell Biology Laboratory at the University of Bern Switzerland under Chairs Professor Anton Sculean (Periodontology) and Daniel Buser (Oral Surgery). He completed his undergraduate degree and Masters in Cell Biology at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology and a dr. med. dent. thesis at the University of Bern, Switzerland, and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Laval, Canada. His main research interests involve the use of growth factors used for bone and periodontal regeneration, osteoinductive bone grafting materials; collagen barrier membranes and guided bone regeneration in implant dentistry. He has recently been awarded many internationally recognized top young investigator awards including the International Team for Implantology (ITI) Andre Schroeder Prize (2016), the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Young Investigator of the Year in the field of Implant Dentistry (2015), the Canadian IADR Hatton Award recipient (2015), and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Young Investigator Grant Award (2014).

Our goal is to bring dental research to the forefront of the dental training curriculum at Western University. This group provides a means for trainees to convene with a network of individuals from a variety backgrounds in training and dental research at our institution. Moreover, the group holds relevant events and seminars to foster collaboration, learning, and networking.
