Speaker: Dr. Brian M. Wong
Director, Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, University of Toronto (Bio)
Opening Plenary Title: The Role of Curiosity in Driving Quality Improvement
Dr. Wong is the Director of CQuIPS, a staff general internist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Division Director and Mr. Mak Pak Chiu and Mrs. Mak-Soo Lai Hing Chair in General Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Wong received his MD and subsequent specialty training in General Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto. After completing his residency training in 2007, he undertook a research fellowship in patient safety funded by the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation. He has co-led several major QI training programs at the University of Toronto, including the Faculty-Resident Co-Learning Curriculum, the Certificate Course in QIPS and EQUIP, and worked with academic departments at the University of Toronto to establish criteria to recognize QI and PS activities for the purposes of academic promotion. Outside of Toronto, Dr. Wong has worked with several national and international organizations, including the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Choosing Wisely Canada, the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, to establish training programs and standards to build QI and patient safety capacity across the learning continuum.
Panelist: Shawna Cunningham
VP People Services & Strategy, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (Bio)
Shawna Cunningham is currently the Vice President of People Services and Strategy at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital. She has over 25 years of leadership experience in the healthcare sector for community, government, and hospitals. Shawna is passionate about quality, culture, and building teams by leveraging organizational talent for improvement. She is known for her ability to problem-solve and build successful outcomes in complex environments through creativity and collaboration. Shawna has a Master’s in Leadership from the University of Guelph, has a LEAN Six-Sigma Black Belt, and holds Coaching, Positive Psychology, Innovation, and Alternative Dispute Resolution Certificates. Shawna is originally from Windsor, Ontario, but has called London home for the last 23 years.
Panelist: Jodi Younger
VP Patient Care and Quality, St. Joseph’s Health Care London (Bio)
Jodi Younger (she/her) is the Vice President, Patient Care, Quality, Facilities and Capital Planning at St. Joseph’s Health Care London. In this role, she is accountable for the overall management and direction in the delivery of 2 regional specialized mental health care facilities in southwestern ON. As well, as the executive lead for the organization’s corporate quality, strategy, and clinical decision support, Jodi works collaboratively with other leaders to advance safe, effective, and impactful care across the organization. Jodi also has accountability for Facilities Management including planning & engineering for all sites at St. Joseph’s and is leading the Capital Master Planning process, with phase 1.2 wrapping up March 2025. With over 30 years of experience, she joined St Joseph’s London in May 2017. Jodi is a Certified Health Executive (CHE) and holds a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Waterloo, as well as a master’s degree in health administration from Université de Montréal. Jodi is registered with The College of Psychologists of Ontario (Psychological Associate) and a graduate of the Rotman School of Management Advanced Health Leadership Program. Jodi is particularly passionate about system-level strategic change: co-chairing the provincial MH&A Center of Excellence Planning & Performance table and, more locally, co-chairing the Strategy and Accountability table leading the London Health + Homelessness, Whole of Community response.
Panelist: Shannon Maier
VP, Children’s Hospital and Women’s Program, London Health Sciences Centre (Bio)
Shannon Maier is the Vice President of Children’s Hospital and Women’s Program at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), bringing 23 years of health-care experience and leadership to her role.
Shannon’s career includes diverse clinical and leadership roles, including Clinical Educator in Maternal-Child Programs and Director of Maternal Newborn and Pediatric Services at Guelph General Hospital. She previously served as Vice President of Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive at Listowel Wingham Hospital Alliance, and most recently, Vice President of Quality and Practice at Trillium Health Partners, a hospital network in Mississauga and western Toronto.
Throughout her career, Shannon has demonstrated an exceptional ability to lead during times of change. She has driven innovative solutions to complex challenges, guided interprofessional teams, and played a critical role in pandemic response efforts, including the establishment of a dedicated pandemic response unit at Trillium Health Partners.
Shannon holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Toronto Metropolitan University, a Master of Science in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (MSc QIPS) from the University of Toronto, and has completed the Advanced Health Leadership Program at the Rotman School of Management. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Toronto, sharing her passion for patient safety and quality improvement with future health-care leaders.
