In Memoriam - Dr. Ramsay Gunton
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dr. Ramsay Gunton, distinguished medical scientist, former professor of medicine and academic administrator at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and a long-time supporter of Western University and Robarts Research Institute.
Dr. Gunton was one of the first Canadian cardiologists to develop cardiac catheterization technique in Canada. He treated all his patients and their families with compassion and dignity and instilled this value to many future doctors he taught and mentored. Highlights of his career include his position as Chair of the Department of Medicine at Western, his role as president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and his time as board member and fellow of numerous Canadian and international medical associations.
At Western he was a member of the Board of Governors and one of the central figures in establishing both University Hospital and Robarts Research Institute. He was the recipient of numerous honours and awards for his commitment to medicine and research, some of which include: the Order of Canada, Rhodes Scholarship, Professor Emeritus and Honorary LLD.
Dr. Gunton has a research chair in Cardiology at Western named in his honour, as well as the Annual Gunton Symposium in Cardiology at Robarts Research Institute.
