Bioinformatics and Data Science
The field of Bioinformatics and Data Science focuses on developing and applying computational tools to manage, process and extract information from the massive data sets being generated by the high-throughput instruments of the modern biomedical laboratory. Researchers in this cluster are; (1) combining data sets on genome sequences, epigenomic modifications, gene expression and metabolic pathways to produce a more complete "multi-omic" picture of cells involved in complex diseases; (2) developing, testing and deploying new molecular, genomic and epigenomic biomarkers and machine learning classifiers for clinical diagnostics; and (3) developing open-source tools to track the spread and adaptation of viral infections, through the comparative analysis of their genetic sequences.
