The ratio of residents to faculty is 1 resident to 3.5 faculty. Incoming residents are assigned a senior resident and faculty member to assist with the transition from medical school to residency. Thirteen four-week rotation blocks per academic year has permitted greater flexibility in scheduling rotations to meet the Royal College training requirements in Pediatrics. There are two Clinical Teaching Units (CTU) staffed by academic general paediatricians, community paediatricians and subspecialists. Each team is comprised of one senior and one junior resident and three clerks. CTU -Windsor provides opportunties to attend an in-hospital consulting Paediatric clinic, the emergency department, and Dental Day Surgery. The team consists of one senior and one junior Pediatric resident, one Family Medicine junior resident and clerks. Residents gain on patient procedural experience in Dental Day Surgery during their rotation in Windsor.
The program includes Community Paediatric rotations in smaller communities in the Southwest region of Ontario, some within commuting distance from London. Residents receive full funding for travel and accommodation for these rotations.
All Pediatric subspecialties are available in our program for resident rotations with the exception of Adolescent Medicine. Residents choose to do Adolescent Medicine as an elective at another site.
There is an extensive elective opportunity in the program. Residents may undertake provincial, interprovincial and international electives. Graduated senior resident responsibilities starting in PGY-2 year.
Graduated call system in accordance with PAIRO guidelines.
Senior Call blocks for PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents supports continuity of care of patients during call blocks,and continuity of clinical learning on subspecialty Pediatrics rotations. Residents have no call/post-call days during Pediatric subspecialty selective rotations.
Teaching sites in the program outside of London are linked by telemedicine videoconferencing and online webconferencing to enable residents to participate in the daily Academic teaching rounds and Academic Half Days, if format is suitable for distance conferencing.
Comprehensive CanMEDS-based 3-year teaching rounds curriculum with protected time for residents to attend daily noon hour teaching rounds and weekly academic halfday. New paediatric simulation program has been integrated in the clinical education competent of the program in partnership with CSTAR.
The Program Director/Associate Program Director have an open door policy and are available at all times to the residents. Program Leadership is formally scheduled to meet with each resident twice a year, with each PGY group twice a year, and all PGY groups twices a year. Additional meetings are scheduled on an as needed basis. The Program offers individual career counseling sessions with the Chair of Paediatrics, beginning in the PGY-2 year, in addition to the ongoing career counseling provided by the Program Director and Associate Program Director.
Extensive resident participation in our Residency Program Committee. A resident representative from each PGY group is a member of our Residency Program Committee, and four RPC subcommittees. We also have 2 elected Administrative Chief Residents and one Education Chief Resident who are members of RPC.
