Dr. Michelle Barton completed her postgraduate training in Paediatrics at University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica and taught for several years at the medical school where she earned a reputation for her teaching excellence. She then went on to complete a departmental fellowship in Paediatrics as well as a clinical and research Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at The Hospital for Sick Children. She later completed training in Transplant-Infectious Diseases in 2009. She holds a MSc degree in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Toronto and boasts multiple first author publications with awards for studies including longitudinal studies on neonatal candidiasis and research in paediatric transplant recipients including vaccine studies and longitudinal studies on EBV. As a member of multiple national research networks, she continues to be actively involved in multicentre clinical research. Some of her interests include:
-Infections in immunocompromised /vulnerable hosts such as neonates.
-Herpes group infections and other viral infections including neonatal HSV, Congenital CMV
-CNS Infections
-Emerging Infections
-Antibiotic resistance and antibiotic stewardship
Dr. Barton is an associate professor and is currently the Division Chief of Infectious Diseases at the Children's Hospital, LHSC. She is a member of several national and provincial committees including the Infectious Diseases Committee of the Canadian Paediatric Society. In this role she contributes to guideline and policy development around management and prevention of infections that affect Canadian children. She was awarded the 2019 LHSC Physician Leadership award.
She is a passionate teacher and dedicated mentor and most recently received the Department of Paediatrics Teaching award 2019 as a faculty who supports resident scholarship.
