Provincial Electives
Thank you for choosing Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University to pursue your elective rotation. The following procedure should be followed to ensure full processing of your elective:
- Applicant should send a letter to the Program, formally requesting the Elective of their choice.
- Along with the request letter, include anticipated start and end dates, a CV, a copy of medical degree, proof of CMPA coverage and a letter of support from the home Program Director. All documents should be emailed to Rachel Liston
- Once all documentation is received, the Program will approve or reject the elective. If approved, the Program will forward all documentation along with a letter of approval from the Program Director, to the PGE office.
- The elective is then reviewed by the Associate Dean, PGE, and, if approved, a letter of appointment is prepared and emailed to the applicant.
- Once returned, the PGE office will send the applicants signed letter of appointment to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
- Once the signed letter of appointment has been sent to the CPSO, the PGE office will email the Program Director and the applicant, notifying them that the elective has been approved and fully processed.
*Please note that the applicant must hold a valid educational license issued through the CPSO

IMPORTANT: In order to pursue any Postgraduate training in Ontario, you must hold a valid license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). It is the responsibility of the applicant to contact the CPSO for a license application package, as well as ensure that all licensing requirements are met prior to the elective period. Contact with CPSO should be made at least two months prior to the elective start date. The Registration Department at CPSO can be reached at 1.800.268.7096 ext. 221.

- The elective is then reviewed by the Associate Dean, PGE, and, if approved, a letter of appointment is prepared and emailed to the applicant.
- Once returned, the PGE office will send the applicants signed letter of appointment to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
- After the signed letter of appointment has been sent to CPSO, the PGE office will monitor for the license to be issued. Once the license is issued a confirmation email from the PGE office will be sent to the Program Director and the applicant.
