Honour: Renowned military surgeon receives Order of Canada
Dr. Vivian McAlister, Professor, Department of Surgery at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, has been inducted by the Governor General to the Order of Canada.
The Order of Canada is considered one of Canada’s highest civilian honours, celebrating excellence in merit, service and achievement across all sectors of society.
Dr. McAlister received the title of Officer of the Order of Canada, in recognition of his influence and leadership within both military and civilian surgical communities, as well as his achievements as a clinician, researcher and educator. He was one of 13 Officers appointed, and part of the 61 new appointments announced in December 2020.
Dr. McAlister is a general surgeon with special interests in hepatobiliary, endobiliary, transplant and combat surgery. He also conducts research in these areas, as well as medical history. Dr. McAlister is also the Director of the Office of Military Academic Medicine at the School. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Medical Service, Canadian Armed Forces, (rank Lieutenant Colonel, Chief of General Surgery), completing overseas deployments in Afghanistan and Haiti.
