Message from the Chair
The Division of Urology at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University is committed first and foremost to the provision of excellence in patient care. As a tertiary referral centre, our clinical catchment area covers all of Southwestern Ontario and beyond. As such, a high volume of clinical activity is conducted in both adult and pediatric patients across various subspecialty areas of urology including andrology/male sexual health, urinary incontinence, urinary reconstruction, oncology, minimally invasive surgery, urinary stone disease, and transplantation. Our program has access to state of the art equipment at all hospital sites including the da Vinci Robot surgical platform. We also possess one of only three full-time Shock Wave Lithotripsy units in the province of Ontario. Our Division currently comprises fourteen full-time clinical faculty and eleven adjunct faculty, each possessing subspecialty academic interests and a strong dedication to residency education.
Our Western Urology faculty have always been strongly rooted to service to the Urology community both nationally and internationally. Members from our Division have and continue to serve on leadership positions including the Order of Ontario and Secretary of the American Urological Association (AUA). Many have served as Presidents of various organizations including the Canadian Urological Association, the Northeastern Section of the AUA, the Urological Society of Transplantation and Renal Surgery and the Endourological Society. We are also extremely proud to be the only center with two AUA Gold Cystoscope Award winners and three AUA Foundation Scholars on faculty.
As an academic program within the Department of Surgery at Western, we are devoted to comprehensive surgical education and cutting-edge translational and clinical research in various subspecialty disciplines. Several members of the faculty are internationally renowned for their clinical and research expertise and work closely with full-time PhDs to advance urological research across a wide range of topics. Our Division participates in an array local, national and international clinical trials across most sub-specialties with our faculty leading many of these studies.
Western is well known as an outstanding site for surgical education. A well-developed core surgery curriculum, a surgical skills laboratory and high-volume clinical exposure are just a few of the opportunities available to our future surgeons. Western Urology continues to be a national leader in competency based medical education and surgical simulation training. We also offer fellowship opportunities across a wide spectrum of sub-specialties including andrology, transplantation, oncology and minimally-invasive surgery/endourology.
