Medical Science Community Outreach (MaSCOt)

The Medical Science Community Outreach (MaSCOt) was created to connect Schulich students to volunteering opportunities in the London and Middlesex community. MaSCOt makes it easy for organizations to post needs, and for students to respond to these needs.

For students

Who can participate?

  • Undergraduate students in Med Sci, including 1st and 2nd year students
  • Graduate,  medical, and dentistry students at Schulich

At this time, only Schulich students are eligible to participate in MaSCOt. For students in other faculties, please visit Western Student Experience's page on volunteering.

How do I start volunteering?

  1. Complete the learning modules and pass the quiz (80%) to receive a certificate of completion. These modules (Understanding the Population, Issues Facing the London Community, Professionalism, and Community-Engaged Learning) were created to help students prepare to engage in the community.
  2. Upload certificate on Get Connected using your Western Identity (no need to sign up) and upload certificate and Vulnerable Sector Check*
  3. Complete profile and start responding to needs

*If applicable. Many volunteer opportunities involve interacting with the vulnerable population, which requires a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). If required, you will need to obtain a VSC from London Police Service.

Where can I find the modules and quiz?

The learning modules and quiz are housed on the MaSCOt OWL site. If you are having trouble accessing the site, please email mascot@uwo.ca.

How do I add MaSCOt on my WCCR?

You can access and add activities on your Western Co-Curricular Record (WCCR) through Western Connect. Once you add MaSCOt to your WWCR, the MaSCOt team will receive a notification to approve the addition. Make sure your volunteer hours are logged on Get Connected so it can be approved without delay.

For organizations, groups, programs in the community

How do we add our organization/group/program on MaSCOt?

Thank you for your interest. We would love to learn more about your organization/group/program, what you do in and for the community, and opportunities for students to get involved. Please email mascot@uwo.ca to connect with our team.

What would be expected from us as a community partner?

  • Manage volunteer postings, including messaging students who have signed up, to provide next steps
  • Keep organization's profile on Get Connected updated
  • Sign an affiliation agreement with Western. *This agreement must be in place before volunteer opportunities can be posted*
  • We would love to see you at our MaSCOt events on campus

We have our own volunteer onboarding process. Will we need to exempt MaSCOt students?

No. While students are required to complete learning modules and pass a quiz to participate in MaSCOt, they must still complete the onboarding process (e.g., volunteer forms, interviews, police checks) and any training required by you.
