Dr. Subrata Chakrabarti has been named Geographic Leader for Asia. The role of Geographic Leader is to serve as a resource and support to the Dean, the Senior Leadership Council and the Internationalization Office in developing a strategic direction for educational, clinical and research activities for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry related to the specific country or region. Alyshia Phillips and Nicole Smith received the Dr. Subrata Chakrabarti MClSc Pathologists’ Assistant Student Award of Excellence. This award is given to students who have shown a particularly high level of collegiality extending across multiple personnel levels, demonstrated excellence in patient-centred care as reflected by the daily practice of pathology, and made exceptional contributions to student or PA staff education. Dr. Sunil Parapuram received the Best Glaucoma Paper Award 2018 for Staff PhD Scientist from the Canadian Glaucoma Society, for the paper "TGF-β induces phosphorylation of phosphatase and tensin homolog: implications for fibrosis of the trabecular meshwork tissue in glaucoma."
Corey Baron, PhD, received 2018 Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award, a program that provides funding to new researchers to recognize, promote and support work that is innovative, impacts positively on the learning environment and has potential to be of significance to society.
Gregor Reid, PhD, a pioneer in the field of human microbiome and probiotics research, has been awarded with the 2018 Canadian Society of Microbiologists (CSM) Murray Award for Career Achievement. He accepted his award at the CSM meeting in Winnipeg in June 2018. Read the announcement

Amy Burke, PhD, and Anu Thomas, PhD, completed successful PhD defenses. Burke was supervised by Murray Huff, PhD, and her thesis is entitled, "Attenuation of Obesity, Hepatic Steatosis and Reversal of Atherosclerosis by the Flavonoids Naringenin and Nobiletin.” Thomas was supervised by Dr. Subrata Chakrabarti, and her thesis is entitled "Role of Long Noncoding RNAs in Diabetic Complications.”
Matthew Berg won a best poster award at Toronto RNA Enthusiasts' Day (TREnD) 2018.
Jacqueline Dron received a CIHR Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship; a CIHR International Symposium on Atherosclerosis Travel Award; the Cobban Student Award in Heart and Stroke Research; and the Nellie Farthing Fellowship in Medical Sciences.
Allison Dilliott received a CIHR International Symposium on Atherosclerosis Travel Award and an Alzheimer Society of London and Middlesex Doctoral Scholarship.
Karen Dunkerley received the Jonathan & Joshua Memorial Graduate Travel Scholarship.
Rosettia Ho received a CIHR International Symposium on Atherosclerosis Travel Award and a Robarts Research Retreat Oral Presenter Award.
Owen Hovey and Muhan (Violet) Liu received Translational Breast Cancer Research Awards.
Michael Iacocca received a Canadian Lipoprotein Conference 2018 Oral Presentation Award; a CIHR International Symposium on Atherosclerosis Travel Award; a Robarts Research Retreat Poster Award; a Canadian Society for Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Trainee Travel Award; and first place in the Golden Helix Abstract Competition.
Miljan Kuljanin, PhD, received the Collip Award from Schulich Medicine & Dentistry.
Matt Maitland received a Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI) Travel Award.
Wen (Mike) Qin received an Epigenetics Trainee Award.
