Biosketch
Dr. Payne completed his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s University in 1996, followed by a Master's degree in Kinesiology at Western University in 1998. He completed his undergraduate medicine degree at Western University in 2002, followed by residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Ottawa that was completed in 2007. Dr. Payne then completed a one-year fellowship in clinical neurophysiology and general rehabilitation in Sydney, Australia.
Dr. Payne is the Medical Director of the Regional Amputee Rehabilitation Program, and is a Clinical Electromyographer certified by the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiologists.
Dr. Payne is a past President of the Canadian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He has held executive positions with the Canadian Physiatrists' Research and Development Fund, and the Ontario Association for Amputee Care.
Academics
Dr. Payne’s research interests are focused on outcomes of amputee rehabilitation encompassing measurement tools, gait skills, falls, cognition, training effects, and quality of life. Previous research has focused on medical education and space flight rehabilitation.

- 2017 - Hippocratic Council Teaching Award in Basic Science for contribution to learning in pre-clerkship education
- 2015 - Hippocratic Council Undergraduate Medical Education Committee Award of Excellence for the Musculoskeletal Course "Innovation in teaching and evaluation, commitment to improvement and student-centeredness with special recognition to the Co-Chair Dr. Michael Payne"
